Toyota Pakistan is well-known for its sedans and the popular Hilux pickup truck series. The Hilux lineup includes the Revo and Vigo models, available in single and double-cab chassis, all powered by diesel engines.
However, there was a surprising announcement for Hilux enthusiasts: Toyota Pakistan decided to discontinue the petrol variant of the single cabin Hilux. This news was unexpected, especially since many people didn't even know a petrol version existed.
To clear up the confusion, the petrol variant of the single cabin Hilux was not popular among customers. Diesel variants dominated the market, likely leading Toyota to discontinue the less favored petrol version.
Despite its discontinuation, it’s worth noting some features and specifications of the single cabin Hilux petrol variant:
Engine and Performance: The vehicle was equipped with a 4-cylinder in-line 2TR-FE engine and a 5-speed manual transmission, producing a maximum output of 122kW and torque of 245Nm.
Safety Features: Safety was a priority with SRS airbags for the driver and front passenger, an immobilizer, key reminder, engine oil level warning, light reminder, clutch start safety, seatbelt, and anti-lock braking system (ABS).
In addition to discontinuing the petrol variant, Toyota Indus Motor Company (IMC) recently halted production for a week. This decision was due to a low inventory of manufactured vehicles and a shortage of parts and components, caused by supply chain challenges.
The Official Notice
In a communication to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX), Toyota IMC stated:
“Based on the current low level of inventory of manufactured vehicles, and shortage of parts and components for manufacturing of vehicles, due to supply chain challenges, the company has decided to close its production plant from 15th July 2024 to 22nd July 2024 (both days inclusive).”
Pakistan's car market is facing significant challenges due to economic issues, hyper-inflation, and decreased purchasing power. According to a JS Research report, the combined sales of the BIG 3 car manufacturers in Pakistan – Pakistan Suzuki Motor Company (PSMC), Honda Atlas, and Toyota Indus Motor Company (IMC) – fell to a 21-year low, with only 88,000 units sold in the fiscal year 2023-24.
The discontinuation of the Hilux single cabin petrol variant in Pakistan marks a notable shift in Toyota's lineup, driven by market preferences and economic challenges. While the diesel variants continue to dominate, the overall automotive industry in Pakistan faces a critical period, influenced by economic factors and supply chain issues.
