Most Stolen Car Parts in Karachi

Karachi has the highest urban crime rate in Pakistan. Crimes like burglary, theft, and robbery are common in the city. Car parts are often stolen, making it a significant issue for car owners.

Commonly Stolen Car Parts

In Karachi, parking your car outside might be dangerous. You might wake up to find your car on bricks with the tires stolen. Sometimes, thieves take the dashboard or side mirrors. In worst cases, the entire car could be missing.

Here is a list of the most frequently stolen car parts in Karachi:

Honda Vezel (Side Mirrors)

The Honda Vezel's side mirrors make a handy target for thieves. Only four screws hold these mirrors in place. A thief can unscrew them with a Philips screwdriver and unclip the wires to steal them.

The Vezel is a Japanese import, so its parts are expensive. New side mirrors cost around 180,000 PKR, and even used ones are pricey, ranging from 70,000 to 90,000 PKR. These stolen mirrors are often sold in Lahore’s Bilal Gunj market or smuggled to other Asian countries from Jalalabad, Afghanistan.

To protect your car, it’s a good idea to pray for safety and recite Ayat-ul-Qursi over your vehicle.

Toyota Corolla (Infotainment System)

A Toyota Corolla's infotainment system is a prime target for thieves. Stealing it is straightforward. Thieves break the rear quarter window, unlock the doors, and enter the car. They unscrew the steering column, unclip the ignition switch, and pull out the push start button, which is usually only held by duct tape. Lastly, the infotainment system is unscrewed and taken out of the dashboard.

In some rare cases, thieves might steal the entire dashboard, but they usually only take the infotainment system. The best way to prevent this is to park your car inside a secure location. If you live in a flat without an indoor garage, covering your car with a rain cover can help hide its model from thieves.

Old Models of Cultus, Mehran, and Alto (Battery)

Old models of Cultus, Mehran, and Alto are easy targets for battery theft. Their hood locks are purely mechanical, so thieves can open the hood from outside if they know the trick. They get access to the engine bay, disconnect the battery, and unclip the hood lock. The next morning, car owners often find their vehicle not starting because the battery has been stolen.

All Local and Imported Cars (Wipers)

Wipers are frequently stolen from all types of cars, often by roadside individuals looking for quick money for drugs. They use a wrench or screwdriver to remove the wipers and sell them for 300-500 PKR, enough for one dose of their addiction.

All Cars (Tires and Rims)

Stealing tires is the most common and oldest car theft in Karachi. Thieves lift the car with a jack, remove all four tires and rims, and leave the car standing on bricks. The next morning, car owners find their tires missing. Although it is frustrating, at least the thieves leave the car on bricks, preventing damage to the brake pads, which would be costly to repair.

Conclusion

Car part theft is a widespread issue in Karachi. Protecting your vehicle requires vigilance and sometimes creativity. Parking in secure locations, using car covers, and praying for safety can help reduce the risk of theft. Knowing which parts are commonly stolen can also help car owners take extra precautions.
