BAIC has unveiled the new BJ60 SUV, which will compete in the Chinese market against the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado. Another carmaker, Great Wall Motors, is preparing a Prado-rival named the Tank 500, against which the BAIC BJ60 will compete.
The BJ60 has BAIC's trademark design language, with a recognized grille similar to the BJ40 Plus SUV. The size and general shape are quite similar to the Land Cruiser Prado and the Tank 500. The BJ60 has a wheelbase of 2,820 mm and is 5,020 mm long, 1,955 mm wide, and 1,925 mm height. It will be available in 5- and 7-seat configurations.
With a lot of straight lines, twin displays, and a black and white color palette, the inside has been kept basic. The center screen is a 12-inch floating device with a HUD, panoramic roof, rear air-vents, 260-color interior ambient lighting, and other features. In the next days, BAIC will reveal further information about the BJ60.
BAIC hasn't revealed any technical details about the BJ60's performance yet, but according to sources, it will use a hybrid system with a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of under 6.0 seconds and a 1,000 km range. Because it is positioned as a true off-roader, it will benefit from a suitable 4WD system.
Chinese automakers are already entering the luxury SUV category with models like the BAIC BJ60 and GWM Tank 500, but it will take a long time to displace the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado. However, given the supply chain challenges and delivery delays, the Chinese can easily gain a foothold in the area, particularly in their home market. They do, however, want to stretch their wings beyond China. Only time will tell if the new Chinese SUVs pose a threat to the industry's renowned names.
