The all-new third generation Peugeot 408 has been introduced, bidding farewell to its previous C-segment sedan design in favor of a fastback crossover. Peugeot claims that the brand-new 408 is "surprising from every viewpoint."
The most recent 308 and 508 are supported by an improved version of the EMP2 platform, which also supports the brand-new Peugeot 408. In order to create a highly dynamic and aggressive form, the fastback profile is supported by a design that doesn't hold back on angular lines and creases. The current generation of Peugeot vehicles has higher wings and a tall bonnet that is positioned between them. Vertical dashed lines converge towards the lower side of the grille, which merges into the front bumper. The new 408's front end is composed of a slim set of matrix LED headlights flanked by iconic fang-shaped LED daytime running lights, a trapezoidal-shaped lower intake, the most recent Peugeot emblem, and the 408 script directly in front of the bonnet shut line.
The bottom half of the 408 has black body claddings that wrap around it, much like any other crossover, while the sides have sculpted elements with even more angular lines. The fuel door has a characteristic window line that rises slightly above it and continues farther back to the base of the sharply sloped C-pillar. The tailgate has an integrated lip toward the back to emphasize the fastback design even further. A trim piece that runs through the Peugeot emblem connects the distinctive three-claw LED taillights, and the stylish rear bumper accentuates the "look at me" design philosophy.
With a better wheelbase of 2,787 mm, the new Peugeot 408 crossover has dimensions of 4,687 mm in length, 1,848 mm in width, and 1,478 mm in height. Being a crossover, the length is clearly shorter than the previous sedan, but the width is broader by 28mm and the height is 10mm lower to give it a sportier stance. Additionally, the wheelbase is 50mm longer than the sedan's earlier model.
The Peugeot i-Cockpit, a small double-D steering wheel, a high-mounted digital instrument cluster, and a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system with fully configurable i-toggles are all included inside the new Peugeot 408. These features allow drivers to access standard vehicle features like the air conditioning, media, and telephony. Other standout features include a power sunroof, keyless entry, push-start, an 8-color ambient lighting system, a motorized tailgate with hands-free operation, and a Focal Premium Hi-Fi sound system.
The new 408 has 6 cameras and 9 radars for safety and driver assistance systems. These devices enable features like adaptive cruise control with stop and go, automatic emergency braking, active lane departure warning and prevention, driver attention alert, road sign recognition, a night vision system, long-range blind spot monitoring (up to 75m), rear traffic alert, a 360-degree camera, and automatic high beam. For individuals who want semi-autonomous driving features, a Drive Assist 2.0 system will also be made available in the future. Semi-automatic lane change and expected speed suggestion are two new features that can be employed on dual carriageways.
The new Peugeot 408 will have two plug-in hybrid choices in addition to one petrol engine. With an 8-speed automatic transmission, the petrol version's PureTech 1.2L turbocharged three-cylinder engine delivers 129 horsepower and 230 Nm of torque. Power is delivered to the front wheels.
The plug-in hybrids, on the other hand, have a PureTech 1.6L turbocharged four-cylinder engine, an integrated electric motor, and an eight-speed automatic transmission. The engine's power separates the two alternatives even though the e-motor has a rating of 81kW (109hp) and 320 Nm. The Hybrid 180 e-EAT8 PHEV produces 180 horsepower (133 kW) and 360 Nm of torque when the power of the combustion engine and electric motor are combined. The more powerful Hybrid 225 e-EAT8 model has 225hp (165kW) of horsepower and the same 360Nm of torque.
Once production at the Mulhouse facility in France gets underway, the brand-new Peugeot 408 is expected to be on sale in Europe in the early months of 2023.
